How to build a DIY media console, designed to look like a printmaker's table. Opens shelving plus 3 spacious drawers gives plenty of storage.

Hey everyone! It’s Jamison from Rogue Engineer again and this time I’m bringing you plans for this awesome printmakers media console that my wife just had to have. This was a fun build and a great addition to our living room. One cool feature on this media center is the 3 large drawers. Even better is that these drawers don’t require slides! If you’ve ever had to install slides then you’ll understand my excitement. Either way I hope you enjoy the process of how it all came together and please head on over here to grab the plans to build your very own.

How to Build a Printer-Inspired Media Console

Follow along with me as I take you step by step how I built my media console.

I started out by assembling the top using my Kreg jig.

DIY Printmakers Media Console Plans - Step 1

To assemble the sides I started by screwing the 1x2s to the 2×2 legs

Then I drilled pocket holes in the plywood panel and attached that to close out the sides. I also added holes at the top to attach to the top in a later step.

Next I started assembling the base, using a 2×4 for the back and bottom, and 1x2s for the face frame.

Than I attached the base to the top. I placed the shelf inside of the base to make sure it was square during assembly.

Now I added the dividers by screwing them to the top and nailing through the face frame.

Then, I add the shelf with pocket holes and 1-1/4″ brad nails into the dividers.

These 1x4s are installed with 1-1/4″ brad nails and wood glue and will keep the drawer tipping forward. Without drawer slides you have to restrict the movement of the drawer in all directions but one (in and out). This restrict the drawer from rotating once pulled out.

Then I added the drawer supports. These will restrict the side to side movement of the drawers.

Finally it is time to make the drawers. Pocket holes, wood glue and brad nails will do the trick here.

Now is the best time to finish the media center. My wife wanted the drawer fronts (false drawer fronts) to all look a little different. So we stained the entire console with Ash wood stain from Rustoleum but for the drawer front we used different stain colors and even mixed some stain colors to get the look we wanted.

Once the drawers are set in place you can nail the false drawer front in place. Then take out the drawers and screw from the back. Finally add the drawer pulls and you’re done.

So here’s how it turned out!
