East Coast Meets Santa Fe: Modern Southwest Style

This historic Santa Fe home is a recent project of interior designers Michael Violante and Paul Rochford of V & R Interiors who took the project carefully and elegantly into the 21st century. A beautiful estate, the property was restored to its original grandeur with amenities and upgrades that make it energy efficient, like its gardens/landscaping that is distinctly water-saving. The owners, from Washington, DC, had been visiting Santa Fe for decades with their children. Now, with grown children and a house filled with grandchildren, they wanted a chic, serene home perfect for large-scale entertaining, outdoor life, while still being kid-friendly. This is now the perfect home for a family who loves to cook and eat outside, hike, fish, ski and horseback ride, it is a complete paradise with plenty of room for loved ones.

The grand wooden gates open up to a courtyard in this classic New Mexico Territorial style abode. The house itself is 6,000 Sq. Ft. and situated on a picturesque hilltop. The home was originally built in 1900 with thick adobe walls, deep windowsills and ceilings covered with vigas, which were largely ornamental rather than structural. This created a dark space with a lot of small rooms.

The house was gutted and reworked by Sharon Woods of Woods Design Builders, who also serves on the Santa Fe Historic Design Board. The kitchen was updated and expanded, a new living room, master suite and porch was created, as well as a new pool and a new office. The newly installed flooring, cabinetry, windows and doors opened up the space amazingly, flooding the interiors with natural light. The gorgeous views were now visible from every room in the house. The original beauty of the house was preserved, but at the same time fused with a modernity that worked for this sophisticated East Coast couple.

The house is a mix of new and old furnishings from many time periods, which inform much of Violante & Rochford’s work; for example an 18th-century French benched seat is located in the dining room with antique Santa Fe chairs. Many of the newer pieces in the house, like the dining table were custom-created by Violante & Rochford and fabricated by local wood artisan Christopher Thayer. The dining room punch-tin chandeliers were a collaboration between the designers and the homeowners, again using local craftspeople to fabricate. There are fabrics from the UK, John Robshaw and Brunshweig. Many of the linens were designed by Violante & Rochford, which gives the whole project a very exclusive and unique feel.

The husband, originally a Brit, and his wife also brought many of their European-style pieces from Washington with them. All of the eclectic décor co-exists in the house harmoniously with a fusion of Native American, Spanish Colonial and New Mexican culture and art. Michael and Paul curated the couple’s extensive art collection, adding some new pieces to the mix that create an elegant, comfortable and distinctive home.
